Don King - Wywiad

Interview With Don King

Byline: Neil Cavuto

Guest: Don King

NEIL CAVUTO, HOST: All right, here`s a bit of a different play on things from the guy who runs the Office of Management and Budget to the guy who essentially runs the state of boxing today. But he`s a very big Democrat. I`m talking about Don King, who is here at the convention site with us.Don, always good to see you.

DON KING, BOXING PROMOTER: Always a pleasure to be with you, Neil.

CAVUTO: All right, now you`re backing the president -- why is that?

KING: You know, I`m working for the president because he`s the man with the plan to make American better -- black and white, alike. And I think that he is a man that is decisive; he`s bold and innovative; and he`s working for a better America.

And I`m delighted that I have him as president of these United States, because without him, as you know, terrorism anywhere is a threat to freedom everywhere. And I`m confident that with a man like George Walker Bush in the White House, both Democrats and Republicans are very happy; they are very comfortable, because they know, that he means what he say, and he says what he means.

CAVUTO: Let me ask you, Don, why is it then that he only got nine percent of the black vote in the last election. What do you think his problem is reaching out to the African American community?

KING: Because the African America doesn`t understand the man. They do not know George Walker Bush. And they`re not being told the essence of the man. George Walker Bush is a molder of consensus, not a follower of consensus. George Walker Bush exemplifies leadership, and leadership is getting people to do what they wouldn`t do...

CAVUTO: But let me ask you, Don -- could I ask you something very quickly?

Now, the president said he did this for security reasons, that he didn`t want a security team speaking here, but Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell are not here at the convention speaking. Does that trouble you, or no?

KING: I can`t hear you with the singing in the background. I can`t hear the question.

CAVUTO: All right, Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice are not here talking today. Does that bother you, or no?

KING: No, it doesn`t bother me. Somebody here talking today is not going to run the country tomorrow. George Bush is about running the country. He is doing what he is supposed to do as a president of these great United States.

CAVUTO: OK.

KING: He cares about the people that he represents.

CAVUTO: OK.

Don, it`s always a pleasure -- thank you very much. Sorry for some of the audio problems there, but you...

KING: That`s all right -- we can handle that, Neil.

CAVUTO: All right, thank you.

KING: I`m just so happy that we in America -- George Bush, four more years!

CAVUTO: All right, thank you...

KING: Four more years for George Walker Bush! Lead this country -- he will meet these challenges in his destiny! George Walker Bush: four more years!

5 political questions with Don King

NEW YORK CITY (CNN) -- After watching the speech by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani from an RNC skybox suite Monday, Boxing promoter Don King told CNN why he hopes President George Bush scores a knockout in November.

CNN: What do you think of the convention so far?

KING: I think it's a great start for a great future for this country for all Americans. I think it established the fact that George Walker Bush is a tough man with a tender heart. His leadership is impeccable and gives comfort to all Americans, friend and foe alike.

CNN: What brings you to the RNC. Is there a particular issue you are here to support?

KING: My issue is the inclusiveness of African-Americans who have been excluded. When George Bush says he wants one America he is reaching out to African Americans. He struck a chord that goes to the root of racism by appointing qualified people to top positions. Colin Powell as secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice [as] national security adviser, and in so doing he gave a new sense of dignity to those who have been disenfranchised, who have been left out, giving the very thing we've been seeking for 240 years ... by appointing blacks in important positions. Not that they are toadies or sycophants or Uncle Toms, but qualified people who just happen to be black ... symbolizing ... one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all. Four more years for George W. Bush.

CNN: Are you a lifelong Republican?

KING: I'm a 'Republicrat.' I'm for whoever's going to be doing something or the upward mobility of America, black and white alike.

CNN: Did you vote for George Bush four years ago?

KING: I think I did. I don't really know. I'll have to go back and check my notes.

CNN: How is politics like boxing?

KING: It's life. It's the ups and downs of life. It's really the essence of what you do in everyday life. George Bush is a fighter, he's a good fighter. His fighting in politics is like the fighting in the ring. They don't give in and they don't give up and they don't quit.
