Ortiz, “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” makes his return to the Octagon in a continuation of a war with Mezger and his Lion’s Den teammates. Mezger (30-13-2) from Houston, TX began this rivalry with a win over Ortiz in his UFC debut at UFC 13. Mezger caught the inexperienced rookie with a guillotine choke. The two would meet again at UFC 19 with a different outcome. Ortiz (11-4-0) from Huntington Beach, CA took revenge on Mezger defeating him by TKO (strikes). Ortiz added insult to injury following the bout wearing a Lions Den type T-shirt that poked fun at Mezger and the Lions Den.
The war continues and the battle lines are drawn for the Welterweight Championship bout. Former champion Hughes will be looking to reestablish his dominance in the welterweight division and regain his championship belt. UFC rising star Georges St. Pierre wants to prove he belongs among the elite and start his reign as the champ. Hughes (37-4-0) from Hillsboro, IL proved he was ready for another title shot defeating Renato Verissimo by unanimous decision at UFC 48. St Pierre (7-0-0) from Montreal, Canada, who specializes in wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, surprised everyone at UFC 48 showing his stand up skills stopping Jay Hieron by TKO (strikes) 1:45 into round one.
The remainder of the card will be announced as the bouts become official.
