Rorion Gracie Interview
DD: So your tournament will crown one champion like the original UFC's?
RG: It will be an 8-man tournament that will crown one winner at the end. Like the original UFC's, it will be open to all styles, including Sombo, Judo, Freestyle, Greco-Roman, Catch, and whatever other styles want to enter the fray. It will also be gi-optional, so that every style fighter can fight in his traditional garment, whether it a gi, fighting shorts, a singlet.
DD: They can wear anything?
RG: Well, no suits of armor.
DD: Who's going to be fighting and what are the prizes?
RG: The prizes are still being worked out, and I'd like to have the best grapplers in the world be involved. If Tito Ortiz, or Randy Couture, or Chuck Liddell, want to come test their skills between UFC's, they'll be welcome.
DD: When can we look forward to seeing this event?
RG: It's scheduled for October 11, 2003, at the James Armstrong Theatre, in Torrance. Check the Website for details.
DD: One last question. Whatever happened to the mustache we used to see you with during the early days of the UFC, and on the early Gracie Jiu Jitsu Instructional tapes?
RAG: Ha! My daughter, Segina, asked me to shave it off years ago. So, I initially did it for her, but now I think she turned out to be a good fashion consultant after all.
