King Vitali Speaks to BI!
By Scoop Malinowski
The newly-appointed king of heavyweight boxing, a very strong-looking and confident-sounding Vitali Klitschko recently made the following statements to Boxinginsider.com. Read on to learn what Vitali's reaction was when Holyfield recently asked for a title shot, what surprised him in the fight with Lewis, what it might take to defeat Dr. Iron Fist & more...
On his next fight December 11th in Las Vegas: "I am very happy that Danny Williams is my next opponent. Williams is definitely the best, most dangerous and most qualified challenger in the heavyweight division. In no way will I take him lightly or look ahead. My future is Danny Williams...This will be a very tough fight for me. But I am confident I can knock out Danny Williams and finish the job I started on Lennox Lewis. Danny destroyed my dream of fighting Mike Tyson. So now I am going to destroy his dream of winning the world heavyweight championship. I sent Lennox Lewis into retirement, I sent Corrie Sanders into retirement and I will do the same to Danny Williams...This is the third time I will be fighting a British boxer. The first time I demolished Herbie Hide. The second time I defeated Lennox Lewis, but Lewis got lucky when doctor stopped the fight that - to this day I know in my heart - I could have continued."
On his training preparations for Williams: "It's different. Every fight is different. Every fighter is different. And you need a different preparation. And that way, I can't tell you exactly. I have different preparations for Danny Williams than I had for Corrie Sanders, than for Lennox Lewis. Special preparations for Danny Williams. We see his technique, his size, his boxing skills...different tactic, different strategies. It's many, many points."
Vitali's prediction?: "I give my best to be the winner. You know what? I don't know,
Danny Williams doesn't know. Nobody know how will be fight. Two big guys - it's heavyweight, Heavyweight championship of the world. Your prediction before Danny Williams-Tyson fight? (Tyson). Yeh, you see? It's heavyweight. Nobody knows. That way it's interesting. Danny Williams is a very strong fighter. And I want to show everybody I am stronger than Danny Williams, the man who destroyed Tyson."
Vitali on if he was impressed by anyone on Don King's Nov. 13th MSG show?: "No, it was boring."
Vitali on the Ruiz-Golota battle: "Everybody don't talk about Ruiz fight, everybody talk about his coach [laughter].
On Who won Golota or Ruiz?: "If your opponent goes down, nobody has any questions about who won the fight. And right now, the fans from Poland has his opinion. The fans Latinos has his opinion. And it was not so clear a fight. My personal opinion - Golota was a little bit better. But you know what? I'm not a referee or a judge, I just saw it on television."
Vitali on how life has changed since becoming WBC and The Ring Heavyweight champion: "Nothing has changed. It's changed - I have more attention from boxing fans, from boxing experts. But nothing has changed in my private life."
Vitali on what it will take to beat him?: "To beat me? You think you need advices to Danny Williams [laughter]."
On how long he will hold the heavyweight title?: "Nobody know. You can't be champion forever. I try to keep my title for so long if it's possible. If I have the feeling I don't have luck any more, I stop. It's painful to see like my box idol Evander Holyfield lose fight, next one, the next one. It's painful for me. And it gives me questions, Why he don't stop? His personal decision. But for me it's painful. Holyfield asked me about a chance to fight him. I tell to him I have so big respect and for me it's impossible to fight against my idol. For me it's painful to see fight against Larry Donald or Chris Byrd, it was painful and I don't want to fight him."
Vitali when asked if he learned any unexpected things about the greatness of Lennox Lewis in their fight last June: "Yes. You saw my face after the Lewis fight. And the question is why? If Lewis gives advices to make the cuts to ... I have experience, 16 years in boxing, half of my life ... and I never was cut. Never before Lennox Lewis fight. And against Lennox Lewis I have five cuts. And the question is why? I have maybe answer. Maybe in my career, I never fight against so strong a fighter like Lennox Lewis. And I hope I will never be cut again...He's good fighter. He's good fighter. He show everybody for a long time he's best fighter in the world. And in my opinion he's one of the best fighters of history."
