The Cage Vol. 1: “First Time in Finland” Report
Submitted by: GB Info
Posted On 10/10/2004
On the 2nd of October, 2004 the newly founded MMA club “Grappling & Boxing Gym Helsinki” presented the first MMA event in Finland that was held in a UFC-style, octagon-shaped cage.
The finnish media covered the event in a positive atmosphere, with one of the leading papers, Ilta-Sanomat publishing a report on the weigh-ins and an informative interview with MMA-veteran Mika Ilmen in addition to a lot of publicity received on the radio and local press.
The event itself featured 8 action-packed bouts scheduled for three five-minute rounds, of which none went the distance. Unfortunately the main event itself between Polish Grzegorz Jakubowski and home-town favourite Mika Ilmen had to be cancelled when Mika tore his bicep on the day of the event.
1st Match -65 kg
Marius Liaukevičius (Team Bushido, Lithuania) vs Jarkko Keränen (Shootfighting Oulu, Finland)
Winner: Marius Liaukevičius, triangle choke round 1 2:14 min
The fight started with Jarkko eating a couple of jabs before managing to take Marius down against the cage. At 2:14 of the first round Marius caught his opponent in a triangle from the guard and Jarkko had to tap.
2nd Match -70 kg
Kęstutis Krukonis (Team Bushido, Lithuania) vs Pasi Maliniemi (Shootfighting Lappeenranta, Finland)
Winner: Pasi Maliniemi, rear naked choke round 2 0:42 min
Pasi displayed his excellent takedown-skills in this fight and wasted no time standing up with Kestutis. On the ground Maliniemi dominated in convincing fashion, ground ‘n pounding his opponent in the first round and taking him down at will. In the second round Pasi shot in for the double-leg and lifted Kestutis up, following with a body slam which knocked the wind out of him. After a brief scramble, Pasi caught Kestutis’ back and choked him out.
3rd Match -84 kg
Adil Mouadane (France) vs Juha Vehniäinen (Shootfighting Oulu, Finland)
Winner: Juha Vehniäinen, rear naked choke round 1 3:51
After a brief stand-up exchange Juha shot in for the takedown and was caught in a guillotine but managed to work himself free. Juha won the bout by rear naked choke at 3:51 of the first round.
4th Match -93 kg
Fredrik Wester (Shootfighting Örebro, Sweden) vs Tommi Heinonen (Porin Pankration, Finland)
Winner: Tommi Heinonen, TKO (strikes) round 1 1:19 min
This bout was a stand-up war with Heinonen defending Fredrik’s takedown attempts and keeping the fight at a distance. During a couple of exchanges Heinonen tagged Wester with a powerful right and the referee Kari Aittomäki decided to stop the uneven bout in favour of the finnish powerhouse.
5th Match +93 kg
Rolandas Remeika (Team Bushido, Lithuania) vs Toni Valtonen (Espoon Kehähait, Finland)
Winner: Toni Valtonen, TKO (strikes) round 2 2:54 min
The first heavyweight bout of the night was rather onesided with Valtonen taking down and mounting Rolandas in the first round. The Lithuanian fighter showed a great fighting spirit and managed to weather the storm until the end of the round. The second round was a carbon copy of the first one and the referee wisely decided to stop the bout at 2:54.
6th Match -84 kg
Pekka Rantala (Riihimäen Heracles, Finland) vs Joni Kyllönen (Shootfighting Oulu, Finland)
Winner: Joni Kyllönen, TKO (strikes) round 1 2:08 min
The beginning of the round saw Rantala getting the better of the standup exchange until Rantala clinched and pushed Kyllönen against the fence. From the thai-clinch Kyllönen caught Rantala with a well-timed knee to the head which dropped him. Kyllönen followed up immediately with strikes and the bout was stopped at 2:08 of the first round.
7th Match +93 kg
Michal Materla (OC-fight team, Poland) vs Miika Mehmet (GB-Gym, Finland)
Winner: Michal Materla, rear naked choke round 1 4:08 min
Mehmet opened up immediately with a powerful combination which nearly knocked down Materla. After a furious start the pace slowed down as Mehmet started to gas and the Polish bjj purple belt’s excellent ground skills started to show. Mehmet used a lot of energy defending Materla’s takedowns and ended up on his back from where Materla worked himself methodically to the mount. After unleashing some heavy strikes Materla was able to take Mehmet’s back and ended the bout with a rear naked choke.
8th Match -84 kg
Petras Markevičius (Team Bushido, Lithuania) vs Niko Puhakka (Espoon Kehähait, Finland)
Winner: Petras Markevičius, triangle choke round 1 3.53 min
Puhakka showed improved stand-up skills in this bout as he exchanged with Lithuanian striker Petras Markevicius. After defending a couple of takedown attempts the fighters clinched and Puhakka threw Petras but ended up on the bottom. Puhakka worked himself to the stand-up position and resumed to clinch. From the body-lock Puhakka displayed a beautiful suplex and brought down Petras in the sidemount. The Lithuanian quickly worked back to the guard and caught Puhakka in triangle choke.
