Vic Latour (Jean-Claude Van Damme), the only westerner to ever win the Championship of the Kumite, returns to defend his title after years of alcoholism and despair, overcoming great odds to achieve greater glory.
SYNOPSIS:
Since achieving the heights of victory, Vic has experienced the depths of despair. Once a devoted family man and martial arts instructor, Vic now struggles to cope with the tragic loss of his daughter, BIANCA, killed in a senseless gang shootout. Since Bianca's death, Vic's wife JANICE has been locked in a state of catatonic shock. A ghost. The Kumite trophy, a sleek sword, hangs in the wall of the gym he calls home, a relic and a reminder of his former glory. He's an outsider in his South Central Los Angeles neighborhood, and has become a drunk. Vic's only friend is a kindly neighbor he calls MAMA.
Vic learns that his wife will be sent to a state facility if he cannot pay the hospital for her stay. Distraught and angry, he retreats to a bottle of scotch at a rough Los Angeles dive, where he is confronted by two thugs. Instead of fighting them, however, he smashes their prized automobile. In the dead of the night, the thugs show up at his gym to exact their revenge. At this moment, Vic realizes that all he knows how to do...is to fight. He enters the upcoming Kumite tournament to defend his trophy, the symbol of his past glory.
The news of his entry excites the fighting community. KENTA YAMAGAMI, the head of the Underground Fighting Arts Association, easily sells all sixteen positions to wealthy investors from all over the world. Each investor represents a fighter they believe can win the Kumite. In a coup of sorts, an eccentric Texas oil tycoon, LEE COOPER, come up with enough cash to legalize the Kumite and bring it to Western soil for the first time in its storied history. This move infuriates the other investors, but makes Kenta Yamagami even wealthier than he can imagine, leading the unveiling of a new fighting entity, the Global Fighting Arts Association.
Meanwhile, Vic returns to his boyhood home in Belgium to train with his beloved sensei, a stern but lovable man named CLAUDE GOETZ. Vic's body is worn from years of abuse, which leads Cluade to devise a training regimen that is sometimes humorous, but often punishing. He whips Vic into shape, and pronounces him ready to fight in the Kumite. But the competition is heated and fierce. AKIRO YAMAMOTO, a young Japanese fighter, mercilessly tears through his opponents with only one goal in mind: to defeat the Cajun and win back his family trophy. THE WOLF, a Russian fighter, fights to stop the cruel hunting of his only friends, the wild wolves of Siberia.
